Timber Talons : Tractor Log Skidder made Easy!
For over 14 years the Timber Talons small tractor log skidder attachment has been helping people manage their woodlot, pull logs, chop logs, and more! The device was specially engineered to be safe and easy to use. Timber Talons lets you attach, drag, and release logs without leaving the tractor.
Small scale logging or Small Woodlot logging is common to many small acreage
timber land owners and farmers. Commonly their logging operations are
conducted using hydraulic grapples, logging tongs, chains and cables or power
winches. Hydraulic grapples and 3 point hitch mount winches can be expensive
for small wood lot owners that wish to do their own timber thinning, small scale
commercial logging or just firewood cutting. With the exception of the expensive
hydraulic grapples, the other common equipment in the land owners tool box
often requires boots on the ground and working hands to set chokers, logging
tongs or chain loops. That means lots of climbing on and off the tractor to pull
out cable, set chokers or dig under a log to get a grip on it. Many small scale,
small wood lot owners have experienced injuries or maybe snagged clothing while
climbing on or off their tractor while working in the woods. Additional
inconvenience is the thick brush, black berries or poison oak/ivy that irritates
many of us.

Small Wood Lot Tools was started by Tom Repko, a small woodlot owner and
mechanical engineer. Out of necessity, he designed the Timber Talons to
accomplish his own forest maintenance, timber thinning and firewood cutting.
The Timber Talons are a hands free operation 3 point hitch attachment system that functions equivalently to expensive 3-point hitch attachment hydraulic grapple systems at a tenth the cost.
Similarly to the power systems, the Timber Talons provide hands free, “from the tractor seat” operation of grabbing, pulling and releasing logs. The employment of the three point lift system on any Category 1 tractor, provides log lifting to allow easy, minimal ground impact pulling of logs. With a very short learning curve, a new Timber Talons owner/operator can back up to, lower the three point hitch, lift the 3 point hitch and pull away with the log securely following. The release of the log is even simpler than hook up. Simply lower the three point hitch fully and drive away. The Timber Talon system releases and pulls clear of the log.
The Timber Talons Three Point Hitch Log Skidder Attachment consists of two subassemblies, as shown in the below photo. The tong assembly in my left hand weighs about 31 pounds. The main frame assembly in my right hand weighs about 42 pounds. When partially disassembled and boxed for FedEx ground shipment, the box weighs about 78 pounds.
Safe and Smart Design
The engineered design uses high strength steel that is strong, yet forgiving, and the pull force on the tractor is from the draw bar, which is where tractor
designers intend to place the pulling forces. By pulling from the draw bar, NOT the 3-point hitch, the system complies with the tractor designers intent and minimizes the risk of tractor flip over.
By pulling from any point above the drawbar and the rear axel, it can cause the tractor to flip over backwards.
It is safer and better to use a device like the Timber Talons that pulls from the drawbar and ensures that the pull force cannot flip the tractor.
